Atemi Jutsu Syllabus

6th Kyu (White belt)
  • Ukemi (Mae, Ushiro, Yoko) [breakfalls: front, rear and side)
  • Escapes from wrist grabs
  • Show first five arm locks from the arm locks kata
  • Show 3 wrist locks from standing (nikkyo, sankyo, kote gaeshi)
  • Escape from hair grab from the front
  • Demonstrate 3 methods of defending against kicks to the head, while on the ground
  • Know japanese terminology for the above

5th Kyu (Yellow belt)
  • Show locks throws and immobilisations from wrist grabs
  • Show locks, throws and immobilisations from hair grabs to front and rear
  • Show defences (left and right) against sleeve hold, lapel hold (single and double), double lapel hold with head butt/knee strike, bear hug from rear
  • Know japanese terminology for the above

4th Kyu (Orange belt)
  • Ukemi. Demonstrate left and right forward rolls, to standing, kneeling and side breakfall. Show a left and right side rear rolling breakfall
  • Show how to parry a straight thrust knife attack in 8 directions
  • Defend against a punch to the face, a downward blow to the head and a side blow to the head, demonstrating karate blocks, atemi strikes, judo throws and aikido techniques
  • Defend against kicks to the head and stomach
  • Show the first five seated techniques in the Kime-no-kata, with a partner of your choice
  • Know japanese terminology for the above

3rd Kyu (Green belt)
  • Defend against chokes and strangles whilst lying face up and face down on the ground
  • Defend against chokes and strangles standing up
  • Defend against bear hugs from the front and rear
  • Defend against a rear grab, trapping both arms
  • Defend against knife attacks (downward, thrusting and side blows) to the head and torso
All the above techniques should end in a throw or immobilisation
  • Defend against two attackers, who will use grabs or punches to the face
  • Show the first five seated and the first five standing techniques in the Kime-no-kata, with a partner of your choice
  • Know japanese terminology for the above

2nd Kyu (Blue belt)
  • Defend against a knife threat to the head or torso (from front, side and rear)
  • Defend against a close quarter gun threat to the head or torso (from front, side and rear)
  • Defend against against a single attacker, who is using grabs, punches and kicks and who will continue to attack until he is immobilised
  • Defend against an attack (grab or strangle) from the rear
All the above techniques should end in a throw or immobilisation
  • Defend against two attackers, one with a knife, who will attack from multiple directions, singly and together
  • Successfully defend against a half circle attack from multiple attackers, attacking with a downward blow, side blow or straight punch
  • Show the first eight seated and the first eight standing techniques in the Kime-no-kata, with a partner of your choice
  • Know japanese terminology for the above

1st Kyu (Brown belt)

Student must show a high level of technical ability and a good knowledge of Atemi Jutsu terminology, in english and japanese. Students must be able to demonstrate Atemi strikes, Jujitsu locks, Judo throws, Karate blocks and Aikido throws and immobilisations.Defend against knife, gun and bat attacks from any direction
  • Defend against three unarmed attackers
  • Defend against three attackers, two with a knife
  • Defend against headlocks
  • Defend against having an arm locked up behind the back
  • Defend against a full nelson attack
  • Defend against kicks to the groin and stomach
  • Defend against attacks, using one arm only
  • Defend against a knife threat when backed up to a wall
  • Demonstrate all techniques in the kimi-no-kata, with a partner of your choice
  • Know japanese terminology for the above
